Rosma's Colours of Life
Mdm Rosma Mahyudin Guha, 80yrs, has always loved to paint. She started cultivating her interest in painting during her younger days. In 2007, she decided to donate over 20 pieces of her beloved paintings to the Centre for Seniors & to NTUC Eldercare.
Recently, Mdm Rosma was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease but this has not taken away her resilience and cheerful outlook to life. When we visited her in her cosy home, she shared with us the stories behind some of these paintings that she had donated to us.
Here's sharing with you these stories!
Inspired by the two parrots kept at the entrance of our famous Zoological Garden, Mdm Rosma decided to draw this painting. She said, “At that time, there were only 2 parrots but I thought the painting would look better with more parrots! Thus, I imagined a few more in this fusion of blue, green and yellow".
Titled “Going Back Home”, Mdm Rosma shared with us her feelings when she was in Europe and when she saw these ducks waddling home. She thought they were beautiful and decided to capture this precious moment in her watercolors.
This painting is part of a series that Mdm Rosma drew when she went on a “Artists’ Excursion”. She said, "This painting was drawn in an old fishing village in Singapore, known as the Kampung Fatimah. I was captivated by this Malay woman and her son. They had just returned from school. In those days, the children will take these sampans to school every day."
Mdm Rosma spoke to us with fond memories of how she sat on a small stool opposite this “Corner Shophouse” at the old Club Street to draw this painting. According to her, this corner shophouse was a laundry shop and many people visited the shop for their cleaning service.
